![]() 28mm though, is a good match for the way you see the world as you actually look at it, i.e. ![]() It is often said (and I have said it myself) that 50mm lenses give a ‘normal view’ that match what the eye sees when looking straight ahead. ![]() Using an ultra wide lens for street photography is quite a challenge, and I’d recommend you take a look at some of the tips for ultra wide angle street photography that Yiannis Yiasaris provided for us. Any lens that forces you to get close to your subject to stop them just being a little speck in the frame is onto a winner for me, and 28mm certainly does this! You need to get close with this focal length, but at the same time it doesn’t render all your subjects as grotesquely distorted caricatures. ”Įach day that goes by, the more I shoot, and the more photos I see, the more I agree with that famous statement by Capa. “If your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough. It’s been said so many times before, and I’m going to repeat it once again: In other words, 28mm seems to mark a nice compromise of size, speed, weight, and price. Lots of the camera manufacturers seem to produce a relatively small, fast, and by the standards of camera gear at least, not eye-wateringly expensive 28mm or equivalent lens. 28mm gives you a nice wide focal length but without getting into the expensive and cumbersome realms of 24mm and wider. Ultra wide lenses are difficult to manufacture as the glass has to be optimal quality right to the edges of the elements, which makes them big, heavy and expensive. It’s also doesn’t offer such a super wide field of view that manufacturing one is very complex, and I think this is an often overlooked aspect of lens selection. It’s certainly wide, but not so wide that it distorts images. I think 28mm is quite a sweet spot lens for street photography. So, enter the 28mm… 28mm is wide, but also small They often go something like 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, etc. If you’ve ever done a bit of prime lens research, you’ll have seen that lenses have traditionally come in a fixed set of focal lengths. I didn’t find myself shooting 16mm on the streets all that much though! From my experience with my wide angle zoom, I learned that my ideal street photography lens would be a prime lens wider than 35mm, but not crazy wide. It taught me that for my needs, 35mm wasn’t quite wide enough, and I greatly appreciated having the extra wideness when I wanted it. ![]() Using the zoom was very useful in learning and developing my street photography style though. I’ve greatly enjoyed shooting a 16-35mm zoom on the streets too, but this was very big and heavy. However, I think 50mm is a very constraining focal length – it’s just too tight. I’ve said before that I’ve enjoyed using a 50mm prime lens for street photography because I liked the compact size (many 50mm lenses are very small because they offer such a normal perspective and require fewer pieces of complex glass). Why? Read on for more… A Journey from 50mm to 28mm via 16-35mm Having done my fair share of lens roaming myself, I am starting to wonder if I’ve finally found a lens that is perfect for my street photography, and that lens is around the equivalent to 28mm focal length on ‘full frame’. Some photographers will chop and change their lenses and focal lengths a lot, others will pick one focal length and stick to it, while others will go through ‘phases’ of shooting one focal length for a while, then another, and so on. Choosing the best lens for your street photography is an agonising decision, because they all have their strengths, weaknesses and compromises. We’ve discussed the various merits of telephoto lenses for street photography, wide lenses, and 50mm lenses. One regret I had in watching it was how abrupt the ending was. That the story is as effectively chilling as it is is due to entirely to Virginia Leith’s convincing transformation from one woman to another and yet in the same body. Neither her husband (Skip Homeier) nor her doctor know what to make of this until they find the murder weapon. The theme is that of possession of a living person by the dead, in this case a young bride (Virginia Leith) on her honeymoon who suddenly begins to channel the being of another young woman who has recently committed suicide by jumping from the edge of a cliff into the sea below.īut it was not suicide, the young bride insists in Leith’s new role in the story, it was murder. “The Bride Possessed,” the very first episode, is a good example. The stories on OSB were presented as “fact” and were purportedly based on real events. The big difference between the two shows is that the stories on TTZ were fictional (and almost always with a twist at the end) and did not pretend otherwise. ![]() In dealing with strange and unusual events in the world around us, there are some similarities between One Step Beyond and the much more well-known series The Twilight Zone, but OSB came along first. Conversely, Doomsday and Night of the Kill – about the legend of the Bigfoot creature – were presented in such a matter-of-fact manner as to give younger viewers nightmares! One story, If You See Sally, about a ghostly little girl who is given a lift by a sympathetic truck driver, had the unexpected effect of generating dozens of letters from viewers who had had similar experiences. Less well-known than The Twilight Zone, this was a superb collection of paranormal tales, including ghosts, psychic phenomena and alien abductions, hosted (and directed) by John Newland on ABC.Īll the stories were supposed to be “based on actual events” and factual documented accounts of the supernatural and psychic phenomena. ![]() (Editors' Note: eFax, MetroFax, MyFax, and SRFax are owned by j2 Global, the parent company of PCMag's publisher, Ziff Davis.) To get a fax number and to receive faxes, you need to spring for the $19.99-per-month Pro tier. Overage fees for this plan are five cents per page. HelloFax and Fax.Plus are our Editors’ Choice winners for the category because they offer an excellent set of features at a reasonable price.
